Manuel is listed in the 1900 US Federal Census as living in Espanola, New Mexico living with his wife of 12 years (Nemecia). The census notes that they have had 6 children, 5 who are still living. Children are listed as Antonio, Piedad, Ramona, Pedro and Felicia. He is stated as being a day laborer, owning his home on a farm, free of mortgage. The census states that Manuel could speak English; however, it also states that Nemecia, Antonio and Piedad (the two children were in school) could not speak English.
In the 1910 US Federal Census, he is listed again as living in Espanola, New Mexico with wife Nemecia and children Antonio, Piedad, Ramona, Pedro, Aqueda, Manuel, and Elias. Daughter Felicia died before the 1910 census. Manuel D. age 57, married 24 years- Railroad worker- Born NM Demecia 42 (9 children- 7 living) Antonio M. 21, Piedad 19, Romona 17, Pedro 14, Agueda 10, Manuel 8, Elias 6.
Listed in the 1920 US Federal Census as living in Espanola, New Mexico as 66 years old, living with sons Manuel and Elias. Another person listed in the household as 50 years old (Nelesia [sic]), but the information is illegible. This is likely his wife Nemecia before she passed away. The date of the census count appears to be January 22, 1920.
Listed in the New Mexico Death Index as: Martinez, Manuel J 11/15/27, age 74 years, and 6 months. This would indicate that his birth month is May, rather than October.
Maria Nemecia was baptized on November 2, 1868 at Santa Clara, New Mexico. Padrinos were Polonia Vigil and Maria del los Nieves Mestes
Maria Nemecia had eight children from her marriage to Manuel de Jesus Martin. Maria Nemecia is listed in the 1870 census living with her family in Santa Clara Indian Reservation, New Mexico. Her name in the census is spelled Demecia. In the 1880 census, she is listed again as Demecia, age 12, living with her mother, a sister and a brother. Her occupation is listed as "seamstress".
She is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census as living in Espanola, New Mexico age 50, living with her husband of 12 years (Manuel). The census notes that they have had 6 children, 5 who are still living. Children are listed as Antonio, Piedad, Ramona Pedro and Felicia.
In the 1910 U.S. Census, she is listed again as living in Espanola, New Mexico with husband Manuel and children Antonio, Piedad, Ramona, Pedro, Aqueda, Manuel, and Elias. Daughter Felicia died before the 1910 census. The story is told that after Felicia's death, Nemecia was very depressed and was never quite the same again.

14. Jose Tranquilino G. Romero
Jose Tranquilino G. Romero was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Francisco Romero and Maria Simona Sandoval. He was born on July 4, 1850. Baptism Records noted that he is the son of Francisco Romero and Simona Sandoval. Abuelos paternos: Esteban Romero & Ynes Vigil, abuelos maternos: Pablo Sandoval & Dolores Salas. Godparents: Deonicio Balencia and Josefa Balencia.
We find him in the 1860 US Federal Census living with his mother Simona, age 30. Simona is living with her father Jose Pablo Sandoval in Agua Frio, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, along with her children, Maria S (Sixta) age 10, Tranquilino age 9, and Maria T (Trinidad) age 7. The younger Francisco Romero who should be about age 5 is not listed in this household. Tranquilino's father was not living with the family at this time, although he was listed with the family in the 1850 US Federal Census for Santa Fe.
I am unable to find Tranquilino in the 1870 US Federal Census for either Colorado or New Mexico. It is possible that he was part of the movement from New Mexico to Colorado with many other railroad laborers at the time, many who seem to have been missed by the census. I am also unable to locate his mother Simona after the 1860 census. I suspect that she had passed away by this time.
Tranquilino is next found in the 1880 US Federal Census as living in Guadalupe, Conejos County, Colorado with his wife Maria Margarita Gonzales. He married Margarita in April 1872 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They had the following children:
Maria Camila Romero
Maria Rita Romero
Gaspar Romero
Gregorio Romero
Leandro Romero,
Guadalupe Romero,
Antonio Romero
and Ignacio Romero.
Guadalupe, Gregorio and Antonio died as small children. I still am not sure about Leandro's birth. I have seen postings my research that claim that he is the child of Tranquilino Romero and Eva Archuleta. I have been unable to reach the source to gather more information. It is possible that he was adopted later as he was not listed in the 1880 census with the family, even though his birth date was before the enumeration date.Tranquilino is listed in the 1885 Colorado State Census living in the town of Guadalupe, Conejos County. His household is listed as follows:
Tranquilino Romero, age 28, Laborer, bp: NM
Margarita Gonzales, age 23, bp: NM
Camila, age 10, bp: NM
Rita, age 8, bp: NM
Leandro, 7, bp: NM
Ygnacio, 6, bp: CO
This is the first indication of a time frame of his move from New Mexico to Colorado - approx. the year 1879.Tranquilino married his second wife, Eduvigen Jaramillo, daughter of Eugenio Jaramillo and Maria Luz Vasquez on January 7, 1893. The marriage record indicates that by this year, Tranquilino was a widower, indicating Margarita had already passed and Eduvigen is listed as the widow of Margarito Esquivel. Witnesses to their marriage are J. Bonifacio Romero and Ma Agapita Lopez. Together, Tranquilino and Eduvigen would have the following children:
Jose Maria Romero,
Gumesindo Romero,
Vicentita Romero,
Rebecca Romero,
and Pablo Eugenio.
Pablo Eugenio died at the age of 5 months of whooping cough.Tranquilino is listed in the 1900 US Federal Census, living in Guadalupe, Conejos, Colorado.
Household includes, Tranquilino Romero, Dubije [sic] Romero, Gumecindo, Vicentita, and Jose Maria. Living next door to Tranquilino is a "Chata Romero" and her grandson Liandro [sic]. As it has been difficult to trace Liandro [sic], I wonder if this could be a nickname for his mother Simona.Tranquilino and Eduvigen would later move their family to Alamosa, where they can be found in the 1910 Census of Alamosa, Conejos County, Colorado, enumerated in Precinct 12. The household included, Tranquilino Romero, Male, White, Married 18 years, Eduvigen, white, married 18 years (8 children, 4 living), Gomecindo-age 16, Vicentita-age 15, Jose Maria-age 11, Rebecca-age 9. Also listed in the household as boarders are Jose Garcia-age 21, and Jose Sanchez-age 12.
Tranquilino is later listed In the F.A. McKinney's 1913-1914 directory for Alamosa, Colorado, Tranquilino is listed as Francolino G. Romero, laborer h: 819 10th Street (wife: Edubijan).
Early records of the Alamosa Spanish Cemetery indicate that Tranquilino Romero was a signer of the original incorporation papers for the cemetery. The property was deeded on September 13, 1913. Per the deed, when a member of the original incorporation papers died, his/her share passed to the remaining owners. Several of Tranquilino's family members are buried at this Cemetery. Daughter Vicentite Romero Balerio Archuleta is buried at lot 12, block 19. Daughter Rebecca Romero Martinez is buried at lot 7, block 14. Son Gumesindo is buried in lot 6, block 10 OR lot 4, block 14. Son Leandro Romero is buried at lot 6, block 14. Son Ignacio is buried in lot 7, block 14 (same as sister Rebecca's). A block is reserved for Jose Maria Romero, but he was buried in Tom Green, Texas. Tranquilino himself is buried in lot 5, block 14, with the record stating his died on 6/24/1916 at the age of 65 years from tuberculosis.
Maria Eduvigen is listed in the 1870 New Mexico Census for Rio Arriba County living with her parents Eugenio and Luz. Maria Eduvigen had two marriages, the first marriage to Margarito Esquivel, married on February 15, 1881 in San Juan Nepomuceno, El Rito, Rio Arriba, New Mexico. She married Tranquilino Romero on January 7, 1893 at St. Augustine Church in Antonio, Colorado.
From her marriage to Tranquilino, they had the following children, Jose Maria, Gumesindo, Rebecca, Vicentita, and Pablo Eugenio who died at the age of 5 months from whooping cough.
Maria Eduvigen is listed as 60 years old in the 1920 census living with her son Hosea (Jose Maria) Romero and Rebecca Gallegos (Rebecca Romero). The census notes that Maria Eduvigen was unable to speak English.
1910 census indicates she had 8 children, 4 of whom are alive. As of Jan 2009, 5 are accounted for.
